Porsche halts new Porsche 911 GT3 deliveries due to potential engine issue causing cars to go up in flames

This is a very serious matter and anyone with a new Porsche 911 GT3 should contact Porsche immediately. As the photos below show a brand new new Porsche 911 GT3 went up in flames. The owner managed to exit the car without incident but as of right now Porsche has apparently stopped deliveries as the matter is investigated. This particular car in the photos is from Switzerland and the Swiss police report details what happened to the GT3.

“On Wednesday (02/05/2014), at 11 clock, a Porsche has caught on fire on the Wilerstrasse. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. The car suffered a total loss in the amount of CHF 200’000. A new Porsche 911 GT3 drove on the A1 highway towards St.Gallen. When the driver perceived strange noises from the engine area, he left the highway. On the Wilerstrasse the driver stopped the car. He saw leaking oil and smoke is in the rear engine. A short time later the Porsche caught fire. The fire was extinguished by the fire department. The cause of the fire will be investigated by the Forensic Science Service of the Canton of St. Gallen police.”

In the interest of safety new Porsche 911 GT3 owners should park their cars for now. Apparently five vehicles have suffered this fate. Here is the perspective of the president of an Italian Porsche club from the Rennteam Forums who saw a club members car also go up in flames:

New Porsche 911 GT3_01“I am the administrator of Porsche Club Campania, an Italian Porsche club.A member of our Club last Saturday was near Avellino, in the south of Italy, his gt3 was really new, just 60kms. First the warning LOW OIL PRESSURE in the display and after few seconds his GT3 was burning. The gt3 DESTROYED is now at the PORSCHE CENTER NAPOLI and this morning an engineer from Stuttgart came here to see the car. It is the 5th gt3 in Europe that burned with the same problem. It seems that Porsche already know where is the problem but I don’t know if the dealer will be able to fix the problem. I will keep you updated.”

Porsche has yet to officially comment on the issue and they are more than likely aware as apparently deliveries of new Porsche 911 GT3’s are halted until further notice.

  • 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

2013-porsche-911-gt3-cup-porsche-motorsport-14

The new 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is based on the Porsche 911 series production model – a pure-bred sports car that offers an exceptional level of power and yet our engineers were able to raise it even further. How? By fighting hard for every kilogramme saved and every kilowatt added. Thanks to the weight-optimised modular racing exhaust system, the 3.8-litre flat-six engine of the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup now produces 338 kW (460 hp). The power of the engine is transmitted to the rear axle by a racing clutch and a newly developed Porsche six-speed sequential gearbox with mechanical slip differential. The electropneumatic paddle shift system makes gear changes even faster and more efficient.

2013-porsche-911-gt3-cup-porsche-motorsport-13The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is also quicker to decelerate. Fit for endurance the newly developed race brake system performs impressively and will impress rival drivers, who can now be overtaken under braking even more frequently. The stability needed is provided by the extended wheelbase – 100 mm longer than that of the predecessor – as well as the optimised chassis.

Our motor racing history gives us an obligation to strive, not only for the next victory, but also for perfection. With the new 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, we are drawing ever closer to our goal. It remains to be seen whether our dream of creating the best race car in the world ever comes true; but one thing is certain – we have once again reinterpreted our vision of one of the most successful race cars ever

2013-porsche-911-gt3-cup-porsche-motorsport-11With over 2,300 sold, the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is the undisputed number one among Porsche motorsport teams. The car competes in prestigious racing events around the globe, including various Porsche Carrera Cups, the GT3 Cup Challenges and the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. It also lines up in various GT racing series and endurance races.

Why? Because the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup has got what it takes. Specifically, we’re referring to a powerful yet extremely efficient engine and a sequential gearbox; the results of considerable development effort. Then there is the bodyshell construction which is based for the first time on a combination of aluminium and steel and boasts improvements not only in aerodynamics but also in safety – another of our primary obligations.

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Cocpit

2013-porsche-911-gt3-cup-porsche-motorsport-08How is success achieved? By a show of strength, but only when this is combined with independent thought and actions. Take aluminium and steel, for example. Both materials have been used in the new 911 GT3 Cup for the first time to form a complete bodyshell. New measures have been coupled with new standards. The integral two-mount rescue device, for instance, enables faster vehicle rescue, which also reduces the risk of further damage. This is combined with a newly developed rescue hatch for the occupants to be extracted safely from the vehicle.

Our objective was to develop the best working environment possible for the most important factor in motorsport – the driver. The cockpit of the 911 GT3 Cup has therefore been refined, both functionally and formally. After all, ergonomics plays a crucial role in motor racing, too. It is a principle exemplified by a new generation of seats with fore/aft adjustment which meet all current FIA requirements, and by the racing steering wheel, which adjusts for height and reach. The most important functions are assigned to switches and are intuitive to select: from the windscreen wipers, main beam, communications radio, power locking and alarm reset to neutral and reverse gear. The switch panel on the steering wheel has a matt carbon-weave finish.

Porsche 911 GT3 RSR at Frankfurt Motorshow 2011

Porsche is good at building race cars, and what the company learns on the track trickles down to its passenger vehicles. This is what makes driving them so rewarding.

In a new video from Frankfurt Motorshow 2011, Hartmut Kristen, head of Porsche Motorsport, discusses the link between track Porsche 911 GT3 RSR and street Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0, and he also takes a look at the future of motorsports and Porsche 911 GT3 Hybrid
