New Porsche Boxster (Porsche 981) in heavy LA traffic :Porsche Spy shots

New Porsche Boxster (Porsche 981)We’ve seen new Porsche Boxster (Porche 981) running at the Nürburgring; now we’ve caught the new Porsche Boxster Prototype testing stateside. Spotted in heavy LA traffic, these two disguised new Porsche Boxsters show subtle but significant differences from the current car. More shapely and aggressive bodywork at the rear is apparent, along with a new taillight design. Also notable, the decklid has gone from two pieces (with a panel each for the convertible top and the trunk) to a clean, single piece of sheet metal. We’ll look forward to seeing how the new design integrates with the convertible top. The front of the car shows some Porsche 911 influence, with bigger vents and shorter overhangs, but I had a tough time getting a shot of the nose from my moving motorcycle…might have had something to do with my thick gloves! If this new Porsche Boxster (Porche 981) does not make a surprise debut at the Frankfurt show in September, perhaps we’ll see it on the stand at Geneva early next year.

15 years of the Porsche mid engine model line

  • Success story: 15 years of the Boxster model line
  • More than 300,000 Porsche Boxsters and Caymans built

2010 Porsche CaymanA nice round number to celebrate the birthday: Almost 15 years to the month after production began, the Porsche Boxster, together with its sister model, the Porsche Cayman, exceeded the 300,000 mark for the number of vehicles built. With its timeless attractiveness, this two-seat, mid-engine Porsche design has what it takes to make yet another sports car icon. To mark the anniversary, a Boxster Spyder with Platinum Silver metallic finish and Carrera red natural leather interior trim will roll off the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen production line in June, destined for a customer in Germany.

There are solid reasons for this long-standing success: The Porsche Boxster and Cayman are continuously developed based on a meticulous mid-engine concept and are therefore deemed to set the standard for sports cars of their class. In the important export market of the United States, this is the tenth year that they have been ranked among the “10 Best” vehicles by Car and Driver Magazine and occupy second and third place in Germany as the vehicles that hold their value the best, hot on the heels of the 911.

The Boxster’s origins testify to the typical Porsche blend of capability, courage and farsightedness. In the economically challenging times of the early 1990’s, the company decided to go onto the offensive and unveiled the classic mid-engine roadster concept at the 1993 Detroit Motor Show. In its design language, the show car was reminiscent of the Porsche 356 No. 1 and the Porsche 550 Spyder. The overwhelming public response clinched the decision to proceed to series production of the Boxster, which began in the summer of 1996, and introduced as a 1997 model.

To put the successful concept on a broader stage, Porsche also developed a Coupe based on the open-topped, two-seater roadster that made its world debut at the 2005 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show as the Cayman. The enormous demand resulted in the Boxster and Cayman being built at Valmet Automotive in Finland in addition to Zuffenhausen.

The model range currently comprises the four open-topped variants, the Boxster, Boxster S, Boxster S Black Edition and Boxster Spyder. These are complemented by the Cayman, Cayman S, Cayman S Black Edition and Cayman R Coupes.

The engine variants for the two model lines range between 255 hp and 330 hp thanks to Porsche Intelligent Performance fuel consumption is rated as high as 29 MPG highway.

New Details on Electric Porsche Boxster E RWD and AWD Prototypes

2012 Electric Porsche Boxter EBack in February, Porsche announced the development of three pure-electric prototypes based on the Porsche Boxster roadster, but aside from a single photo and the fact that the electric motors could produce up to 180kW/241HP, the Stuttgart-based automaker did not release any other details on the cars.

After the demonstration of the Porsche Boxster E, the company decided to share more information on the test cars that are being used as part of the government-funded “Model Region Electro-Mobility Stuttgart” large-scale trial to study the everyday practicality of all-electric vehicles. Of the three Boxster E prototypes, two are rear-wheel drive and one is all-wheel drive.

Propulsion for the four-wheel drive model is provided by two independent electric motors that act on the front and rear axles, producing a combined output of 180 kW / 241HP and a maximum total torque of 540 Nm / 398 lb-ft at approximately 12,000 rpm

The rear drive unit includes the motor and transmission, together with the power electronics and is located where the manual gearbox and exhaust system are accommodated in the conventional Boxster, while the front electric motor takes up the space freed up by the gasoline model’s 64-liter fuel tank. An electric unit synchronizes the two electric motors and controls the drive torque distribution to the front and rear axle.

Porsche says the AWD Boxster E can complete the 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint in 5.5 seconds and reach a limited top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph)

The two rear-wheel drive models of Porsche’s prototype simply discard the electric motor located on the front axle and make do with the rear unit that delivers 90 kW / 121HP and 270 Nm / 199 lb-ft of torque. The RWD Boxster E can dash from a standing start to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.8 seconds, and has a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph).

2012 Electric Porsche Boxter EAll Boxster E prototypes are equipped with a 29 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate based battery, which takes up the space of the combustion engine and offers a driving range of around 107 kilometers / 107 miles. The battery weighs in at 341kg / 752 pounds with the Boxster E tipping the scales at 1,600 kg / 3,527 pounds. The battery can be fully recharged through a conventional socket in approximately 9 hours; however, the charging time can be reduced with a rapid charging function.

According to Porsche, despite the electronic components, there’s enough space left for a luggage in the front storage compartment while the rear luggage area of the Boxster E remains unchanged.

In addition, both the rear- and four-wheel drive Boxster Es are equipped with an Active Sound Design system to provide drivers with acoustic feedback as well as to alert pedestrians and other road users of the car.
