New Porsche 911 will feature a 7-speed manual gearbox

  • Porsche 991 with 7-speed manual gearbox

2012 New Porsche 911 (Porsche 991) spy shotsMore isn’t always better. We’ll agree in terms of power, but respectfully pass when we’re talking about weight. Transmission gears? We’re not sure. Some recent automatics have featured seven and eight forward ratios (and ZF has even announced a nine-speed auto), but the maximum for traditional clutch-and-lever manual transmissions has been six for some time. That’s about to change, however, because we’ve confirmed from various corporate sources that Porsche will offer a seven-speed manual in the new Porsche 911 (Porsche 991), a development we first reported last November.

The point is to offer a tall, seventh gear for improved efficiency and reduced engine noise during long cruises. The shifting experience is said to be similar to that of the current six-speed manual—which we love—there’s just a bit more rowing to do, although, depending on the ratio spread, veteran Porsche drivers might also have to slightly tweak their thinking in terms of gear choice for upcoming corners. Unless something changes and the shift pattern is seriously wacky, though, we doubt anyone will get confused during hard driving, since seventh will hardly be anyone’s go-to gear for corner exit.

2012 New Porsche 911 (Porsche 991) spy shotsAs to the new Porsche 911 itself, it carries the internal 991 designation and is scheduled to debut at the Frankfurt auto show this September. It will be based on the stretched architecture of the 996/997 and offer more rear seat space and a more comfortable, luxurious interior. Vehicle stability will be improved thanks to a longer wheelbase. Future generations of the 911 Porsche991), however, are expected to share many components with the next-gen Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo as part of the VW Group’s highly flexible Modularer Sportbaukasten, or “modular sports architecture.” When and if this platform convergence happens, the 911 will keep its rear-engine layout, although the powerplant may nevertheless be moved forward significantly.

Porsche’s seven-speed manual only adds to the multiple gearbox options in the sports-car segment, which include dual-clutch, torque-converter, and modified automatics; traditional manuals; and even an entirely new single-clutch automatic in the Lamborghini Aventador. Will the seven-speed manual be offered by other automakers as well? At present, a supplier source tells us additional interest in the technology is limited.

New Details on Electric Porsche Boxster E RWD and AWD Prototypes

May 24, 2011 by porsche 3 Comments

  • Electric Porsche Prototypes
  • Porsche Boxster E

2012 Electric Porsche Boxter EBack in February, Porsche announced the development of three pure-electric prototypes based on the Porsche Boxster roadster, but aside from a single photo and the fact that the electric motors could produce up to 180kW/241HP, the Stuttgart-based automaker did not release any other details on the cars.

After the demonstration of the Porsche Boxster E, the company decided to share more information on the test cars that are being used as part of the government-funded “Model Region Electro-Mobility Stuttgart” large-scale trial to study the everyday practicality of all-electric vehicles. Of the three Boxster E prototypes, two are rear-wheel drive and one is all-wheel drive.

Propulsion for the four-wheel drive model is provided by two independent electric motors that act on the front and rear axles, producing a combined output of 180 kW / 241HP and a maximum total torque of 540 Nm / 398 lb-ft at approximately 12,000 rpm

The rear drive unit includes the motor and transmission, together with the power electronics and is located where the manual gearbox and exhaust system are accommodated in the conventional Boxster, while the front electric motor takes up the space freed up by the gasoline model’s 64-liter fuel tank. An electric unit synchronizes the two electric motors and controls the drive torque distribution to the front and rear axle.

Porsche says the AWD Boxster E can complete the 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint in 5.5 seconds and reach a limited top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph)

The two rear-wheel drive models of Porsche’s prototype simply discard the electric motor located on the front axle and make do with the rear unit that delivers 90 kW / 121HP and 270 Nm / 199 lb-ft of torque. The RWD Boxster E can dash from a standing start to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.8 seconds, and has a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph).

2012 Electric Porsche Boxter EAll Boxster E prototypes are equipped with a 29 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate based battery, which takes up the space of the combustion engine and offers a driving range of around 107 kilometers / 107 miles. The battery weighs in at 341kg / 752 pounds with the Boxster E tipping the scales at 1,600 kg / 3,527 pounds. The battery can be fully recharged through a conventional socket in approximately 9 hours; however, the charging time can be reduced with a rapid charging function.

According to Porsche, despite the electronic components, there’s enough space left for a luggage in the front storage compartment while the rear luggage area of the Boxster E remains unchanged.

In addition, both the rear- and four-wheel drive Boxster Es are equipped with an Active Sound Design system to provide drivers with acoustic feedback as well as to alert pedestrians and other road users of the car.

Porsche’s April sales figures are in and the results look good. The German automaker boosted its global sales by 52.8 percent during the month, fueled by strong gains in the United States.

Porsche sold 11,741 vehicles worldwide during April, marking a 52.8 percent sales gain over the same month last year. On the year, Porsche’s global sales are up 31.5 percent.

“Every Porsche is the sportiest model in its segment,” said Bernhard Maier, Porsche AG Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing. “Our customers world-wide love the combination of performance and efficiency, such as in the new Panamera S Hybrid or Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0.”

Porsche’s sales climbed 30.6 percent in Europe during April – including a 19.5 percent increase in Germany – but the sports car maker saw even greater growth in the United States and China. Porsche’s U.S. sales totaled 3,172 vehicles during the month – representing an 81.5 percent spike – while the company’s Chinese deliveries increase by 56.5 percent to 4,029 vehicles.

The Cayenne stood as Porsche’s best-seller for the month – with 5,998 units sold – followed by the 911 sports car with 2,225 sales. The Panamera was close behind with 2,212 deliveries, but the Boxster and Cayman were well off those levels, managing only 762 and 544 sales respectively.
