Porsche 911 Sport Classic 2011 Front angle view“So Matt, how was driving the Sport Classic in Germany?”, a friend asks as I painstakingly return to reality. My answer: “Germany’s nice and all and the car, well it’s just, just, simply put, you see, understand that, well, you know, it’s…”. The Sport Classic is to die for.

If you’re one of the peeps out there that are telling themselves that “it’s only like the 3 billionth special-edition Porsche 911 in the last year, who cares”, you are being a hater and the bus for Hatesville is leaving, so get on it.

Now that the housecleaning is done, let’s get down to business. The Limited edition Porsche 911 Sport Classic is a concentrated mix of the 911’s most historic and classic styling cues rolled into one delectable piece of stunning German bodywork. I like.

From a distance, you’d be fooled into thinking that this is just a regular Porsche 911 Carrera. The first pictures I sent over the web had colleagues thinking that it was a white Carrera 4 with a weird appendage sticking out from the bootlid. Fools!

Porsche 911 Sport Classic 2011 Rear angle side viewThe Porsche 911 Sport Classic is in fact based on the Carrera 4S’ wider body, but drops the AWD, using only the rear wheels for motion. Beyond this point, it is difficult to know where to start pointing out all the items that make the Porsche 911 Sport Classic such a unique car. Let’s go from ground up.

Yes, those are the famed Fuchs wheels and this is the car that reintroduced them. In this application, they are 19″ in size and sport 305-wide rear rubber. Fuchs wheels first landed on a Porsche 911 in 1966, 45 years ago. The car’s colour, aptly named Sport Classic grey, is deep and creamy and includes two subtle centre stripes in a darker shade of grey which run alongside the double-dome roof. Looks like I screwed my ground-up plan…

At both ends, the car receives specific touches. Out back, the bumper is unique, as are the tailpipes. The large-bore chromed exhaust finishers are the only flashy bits about the car. Well, almost. Up front, the lower chin spoiler is particular to the Limited edition Porsche 911 Sport Classic. Another throwback touch are the black headlight surrounds reminiscent of the ones found on the 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. Very nice!

Porsche 911 Sport Classic 2011 Side viewNext on the must-see list is the car’s most distinctive feature: the fixed ducktail rear spoiler as a reference to the 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS. The Porsche 911 is without a doubt gorgeous, but it is this feature that made me weakest in the knees when I picked it up from Porsche’s headquarters in Stuttgart. I personally cannot attest to how functional it is, although I’m certain its reason for being is not solely to partially block the rearview mirror’s line of sight.

This wing is the cherry on top of the icing which is spread over one of the tastiest creations engendered by the Cake Boss. It is the Porsche 911 Sport Classic’s calling card and the reason why this car is so special and highly collectable. It, and every other detail, also proves that this Porsche 911 was clearly made by Porsche enthusiast for Porsche enthusiasts.

The 911’s cabin also gets the spa treatment. The front driver and passenger are held in place by sports seats covered in brown leather with inserts consisting in brown and light grey woven cowhide. I now want underwear made of woven leather… The door cards are treated in the same fashion. More unique touches include an “Espresso Nature” leather dashboard and Alcantara on everything else including the roof liner, pillars and even the cover that hides the bolt that holds the upper portion of the seatbelt on the adjustable track. Beyond that, the shifter and handbrake levers are doused in leather-aluminum.

Porsche 911 Sport Classic 2011 InteriorAttention to detail is everywhere as proven by the leather around the ignition key barrel and the number plate of each individual Porche 911 Sport Classic, a run limited to 250 cars (I tested #000 of 250), on the glove-box cover and the chrome-plated, illuminated door sills.

Apparently, the Bose audio system in this car has 13 speakers and good sound… Couldn’t tell you anything about it, all I did was listen to the flat-6’s wail from not to 8,000 rpm.

Speaking of nought, the Porsche 911 Sport Classic is quicker to 100 km/h (4.6 seconds vs 4.7) than a regular Carrera, thanks to the standard Powerkit ($19,190 option on the Carrera S) which boosts hp from 385 to 408 from the 3.8L mill.

A good portion of the newfound stallions come from the new variable resonance intake system with six vacuum-controlled flaps and an exhaust system specially developed for this car. Together, they also provide the SC with a deeper, coarse flat-6 howl which is scintillating from idle on.

Porsche 911 Sport Classic 2011 EngineAs you might imagine, the Limited edition Porsche 911 Sport Classic was born to run; more specifically, be driven at high rates of speed. As of 150 km/h, the car’s chassis sits neatly and comfortably and wanes not even at well over 200 km/h. Also standard on this car is Porsche’s Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports suspension with a 20 mm lower ride height. The car’s aerodynamics and unflappable stability made me wish for a bottomless gas tank and endless German Autobahns and country roads.

If you’re still not convinced that this car is worth the coin, don’t worry, if you live in North America, you can’t get one anyhow. But, if you’re tallying up the items, options and accessories, know that the Porsche 911 Sport Classic comes with a rear limited-slip differential and Porsche’s phenomenal carbon-ceramic brakes (PCCB).

The massive binders (6- and 4-piston, front/back) and party-platter-sized discs are most welcomed when decelerating from 215 km/h to 100; bite is immediate and if your dentures aren’t well anchored, they may end up in the windshield or worse, nick the leather on the dashboard.

Porsche 911 Sport Classic 2011 WheelI’d be lying if I wrote that the Limited edition Porsche 911 Sport Classic is a better car to drive than the Carrera S. It is, in fact, the ultimate Carrera because it carries all of Porsche’s juiciest options and kit. How it differs is in presentation. The Sport Classic is exceptional and transmits its singularity to its occupants, owner or not.

I, for one, get the sense that I have been given the opportunity to drive a car that, in 30 or 40 years from now, will be regarded as one of the greats from the earlier part of the 21st Century.

As a fun FYI, this is the car that was on the showroom floor at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show and the one that Chris Harris (although with a different number plate) did a video for Evo on last year. This make me feel all the more special…

Porsche review: Buy Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder while waiting your Porsche 918

  • 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder

Limited edition: Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder Side viewIf nothing else, the 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder wins the contest for the Porsche with the longest and perhaps clumsiest name ever. But after a day of driving it on good roads all around Stuttgart’s farm country and blasting along the no-limit Autobahn, however, we break down like always and decide it’s pretty damned cool to possess any Porsche 911 Turbo S whatsoever.

What’s ultimately best about this admittedly opportunistic offering from Porsche’s marketing department is that it doesn’t cost one red cent more than the standard 530-horsepower Porsche 911 Turbo S – $160,700 for the coupe or $172,100 for the convertible. You just know that they talked about charging more in a meeting. “Perhaps we should charge $10,000 more, c’mon. That’s a cool $10 million!” You know they did.

Besides, even more than a normal 911, you probably can’t afford one anyway, so there’s no reason to start bellyaching. That’s because only 918 units of this special Turbo S trim are being shifted out the door at Zuffenhausen, and they are offered only to those magnates who will have their “people” stand in line to fetch a $845,000 Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid. You do not have to buy the accompanying Turbo S 918 edition, but as a Porsche spokesperson tells us, “so far, all 918 Spyder customers have taken their matching-number Turbo S.” Naturally, the numbers on the little badges inside match, which is totally cute. Our tester was numbered “000,” which automatically made us cooler than anyone.

Limited edition: Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder Rear angle viewThis acid green-speckled Turbo S is a nice gesture, too. If you ordered your hybrid super dream car for all that money, wouldn’t you like to have something from the same company to tide you over while you waited for your late-2012 delivery? And it’s all but guaranteed that this Turbo S will go up in value over time, just like the Porsche 918.

Our silver metallic tester with 19-inch black center-lock RS Spyder wheels matches up particularly well with the audacious acid green details and logos added to the outside and inside of the most powerful Turbo. The bright green brake calipers and the telltale green “S” on the rear engine lid really set the mood.

On Germany’s Autobahn or on the nearly blemish-free B-roads around Stuttgart, this is a typically mind-bogglingly quick Turbo S with the aero downforce, discretely rumbling exhaust, and compound disc brakes to match. The main difference we noticed during the whole day actually came while sitting dog-still. When we showed up at the company’s hallowed engineering skunkworks in Weissach, even the Porsche employees who see incredible things every day swarmed around the car. That was an absolute first, so clearly there’s something special going on here.

Mainly it’s that the Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder is a subtle neon sign telling the civilian population, “I’m waiting for my 918 Spyder Hybrid,” and that alone is an impressive statement to be able to make. That’s over $1 million invested in Porsche’s future, so employees have a right to stare and get excited.

Limited edition: Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder Interior SeatsThe special leather chosen for the interior is wrapped around not the most aggressive seats available from the Porsche Exclusive catalogue, but the support is just right for using the car’s capabilities over public roads every day. We’re nuts about the embrace and comfort of these chairs, as they have been studied practically to perfection. Notice the acid green piping on the seats, the green stitching everywhere, plus the “take aim” on-center mark at the top of the steering wheel and all of the colored instrument needles. “Edition 918 Spyder” also comes stitched in green behind the front passengers’ heads. Yes, there are still rear seats – for wee Porschephiles only – and they get the green piping and special leather as well.

The 19-inch wheels and tires – Bridgestone Potenza RE050A 235/35 ZR19 (87Y) front and 305/30 ZR19 (102Y) rear – complement the aggressive driving style that the 911 unfailingly brings out in us. Acceleration with all 516 pound-feet of torque between 2,100 and 4,250 rpm is blistering, the Turbo S’s quoted 3.1-second time to 60 mph telling no lies. With the almost mandatory inclusion of the Porsche Sport Chrono Turbo option, we’ve personally had a Turbo S to 60 mph in just less than 2.8 seconds with the Sport Plus button lit. We did the top-speed ‘Bahn Run, too, and this special Turbo S with rear wing up will fly solidly for minutes on end at 196 mph, leaving nothing but an acid green streak in the eyes of others.

Limited edition: Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder WheelThe seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission with proper Sport steering wheel and shift paddles is, as always, a pure pleasure, even the gearshift lever gets the carbon-look detailing that festoons the cabin at key touchpoints. A six-speed manual would be incredible, but this PDK deserves praise.

North America’s fortunate few 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder buyers can expect to take delivery of their cars starting at some point mid-Summer, giving them just the tool to happily stave off their supercar cravings while they wait for their super-exotic 918 plug-in planet-hugger.
