Dubai International Motor Show 2011 (November 10-14)

Porsche is set to generate a huge buzz at the Dubai International Motor Show (November 10-14) with its regional reveal of the car many said could never be bettered – the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera. Along with the completely re-designed icon, the automaker is also giving UAE visitors the first opportunity to see its breathtaking Porsche 918 RSR concept car.

New Porsche 911 (Porsche 991)Premiered to ultra-enthusiastic response at the Frankfurt Motor Show just a few weeks ago, the new Porsche 911 steps into the limelight with its flat, stretched silhouette, exciting contours and precisely designed details. Re-designed after 48 years, Porsche’s icon offers even handling dynamics thanks to 100 millimetres longer wheelbase, the wider track width at the front and lower ground clearance when equipped with PASM.

George Wills, the newly appointed Managing Director of Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, says: “The Dubai International Motor Show is the perfect platform for us to unveil the new Porsche 911 (Porsche 991) and we are very excited to receive the first feedback from our customers and Porsche fans.”

Purists may be surprised and delighted to hear that the athletic 350 hp 3.4-litre boxer engine consumes a mere 8.2 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres – that’s 1.6 litres per 100 km less than its predecessor.

And with an emission level of 194 g/km CO2, it is the first Porsche sports car to make it below the 200 g/km mark.

Porsche places great emphasis on lap times at the famous German Nürburgring race track to gauge acceleration and braking, stability and agility. The new Porsche 911 Carrera completes the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife in 7 minutes 40 seconds – 14 seconds faster than the previous model.

“With the new Porsche 911 Carrera, the apparently contradictory attributes that have typified the Porsche 911; such as performance and efficiency, sportiness and everyday practicality has been even further extended. That makes the 911 Carrera more of a 911 than ever!” says Wills.

The all-new, lightweight body is an intelligent aluminium-steel construction, providing an overall weight reduction of up to 45 kilogrammes, and significantly greater rigidity. Aerodynamic optimisation measures, including a wider, variably extending rear spoiler, means the lift of the new Porsche 911 Carrera is further reduced.

Porsche 918 RSR concept car

As if the chance to see and touch a new icon at the Dubai International Motor Show is not enough, Porsche is bringing another supermodel to the emirate – the Porsche 918 RSR concept car – or rather, experimental racing laboratory.

The beautiful mid-engine coupé is designed to show clearly what happens when the technology fitted in the Porsche 911 GT3 R hybrid and the design of the Porsche 918 Spyder are transferred to a modern, innovative super sports car.

Dominated by muscular wheel arches, dynamic air intakes and a ‘pulpit-like’ cockpit the Porsche 918 RSR painted in distinctive “liquid metal chrome blue” has a visible fan wheel between the ram air intake tubes and a rear spoiler with RS Spyder dimensions.

Motor racing technology is also underlined by the vehicles’ particularly light, torsionally-stiff carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque.

Its V8 engine is a further development of the direct injection engine from the successful RS Spyder race car – offering 563hp at 10,300/rpm.

Electric motors on the two front wheels each contribute 75 kW, i.e. a total of 150 kW, to the peak drive power of exactly 767 hp. This additional power, generated during braking, is stored in an optimised flywheel accumulator.

Even the vehicle’s functional equipment underscores its puristic motor racing character, and makes it instantly recognisable as something unusual; the upward-opening doors, the air intake in the roof between the wing doors, the two roof-mounted aerials for pit radio and telemetry as well as the no-profile 19″ racing slicks emphasize the racing laboratory functions. This vehicle shouts to be noticed.
