As Porsche’s Strategy 2018 progresses steadily, Porsche has been working on expanding the Leipzig production plant over the last seven months. Porsche says the expansion is primarily to accommodate the production lines for the Porsche Macan. Porsche also says this will create 1000 new jobs.

Porsche has named its baby Cayenne the Porsche Macan, the Indonesian word for tiger hinting at suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics, which are all characteristics of the car says Porsche. The Porsche Macan will be smaller than the Porsche Cayenne and will be based on the Audi Q5 chassis with changes to make it more Porsche.

The new compact Porsche SUV will start coming off the production lines in Leipzig in 2013.

This expansion is the biggest building project in the history of Porsche, which is investing a total of 500 million euro in the construction of a body assembly line and a paint shop.

Spy Shots Porsche Macan - Porsche compact SUV By AutoMotoPortal.HR_06Porsche spy shots – Porsche Macan: What we have here is the new Porsche Macan. Our crafty spy shooters caught the vehicle testing in minimal camouflage. The new Compact Porsche SUV will go on sale late next year.

The project was known as the Porsche Cajun until February, when Porsche announced the new name and said that it is “derived from the Indonesian word for tiger and combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics.”

The Porsche Macan rides on the same platform as the Audi Q5 and will be built at the expanded Porsche plant in Leipzig, Germany.

The headlights, taillights and chrome strip toward the rear are stickers, Porsche’s cheap camouflage. Differentiating it from the Porsche Cayenne, the Porsche Macan has a larger center grille, no creases on the hood, a sloped back and longer overhangs. The new Compact Porsche SUV – Porsche Macan  also reportedly will use a four-cylinder engine, a Porsche first since the Porsche 968 went out of production.

Porsche Cajun – new Compact Porsche SUV go into production in spring 2013

Porsche Cajun - Compact Porsche SUV

A smaller, greener, cheaper Compact Porsche SUV is one of the rockets Porsche plans in its ambitious growth strategy. And this is that car: the proposed Porsche Cajun, a loosely related to Audi’s Q5.

Porsche expansion and how the Porsche Cajun fits in

Leading Porsche into this new era is former senior corporate product planner Michael Müller. He plans to grow Porsche from 81,000 cars in the 2009/10 business year to at least 150,000 units by 2013.

‘It is clear that we must not only sharpen our brand values,’ the Porsche chairman tells CAR. ‘We must also continue to broaden our appeal. ‘To do so, the cycle plan needs attention as far as fresh products, better timing and enhanced synergy effects are concerned. It is essential to speed up our sales and marketing efforts.’

Asked to name Porsche’s core message for the next few years, the new leader answers like a shot: ‘Sustainable sportiness, premium content with a green touch, emotional cars that are even more fun to drive.’

Porsche Cajun: the lowdown

The first all-new model to be generated by Müller and his R&D chief Wolfgang Hatz is known as Porsche Cajun, short for Porsche Cayenne Junior. Every bit as spicy as its bigger brother, the CUV (compact utility vehicle or coupé ute) is scheduled to go into production in spring 2013.

The Compact Porsche SUV is based on the then-facelifted Audi Q5. Audi would reportedly prefer Porsche to concentrate on an even more dynamic standalone three-door version, but Weissach claims it needs the volume generated by the four-door model to achieve a double-digit profit margin.

50,000 Porsche Cajuns a year

While the old regime was strictly against the Porsche Cajun, warning that it would cannibalise the even more profitable Porsche Cayenne, Müller and co view the car as a licence to print money and as an opportunity to boost output by approximately 50,000 units a year.

According to the still provisional launch plan, we’ll first see the full-size four-door coupé and then in late 2014 the two-door version based on a shortened Q5 platform. The Porsche Cajun will be derived from a components set known as MLB wide, which is broader and thus potentially more aggressive than the Q5.

How ‘compact’ is the new Porsche Cajun?

The key dimensions of compact Porsche SUV don’t vary dramatically from the Q5. The rear overhang will be cut by 30mm, the roof comes down by 20mm, and the width increases by 15mm. What makes a difference are the bigger tyres with a strong emphasis on redesigned 19- and 20-inchers. All exterior and interior panels will of course be styled from scratch, but the windscreen angle, the firewall and the roof pillars have to remain as they are.

To ensure a sports car-like driving position, the Porsche Cajun receives bespoke seats, a less steeply raked steering column and the dashboard of the new Porsche Boxster complete with instrumentation, infotainment and the traditional offset ignition lock. The substantial centre stack rises at an angle, Porsche Panamera-style. Although the base model is a four-seater, a 4+1 rear seat will be available as an option. The head- and taillights are of the high-intensity LED matrix beam kind.

Engines in the new Cajun

Together with the body structure of the Q5, the Porsche Cajun will carry over the chassis, steering, axles, quattro drivetrain, six- and seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions as well as the engines, albeit in modified form. Here is an exclusive rundown of the four designated powerplants:

• 2.0 TFSI, 240bhp/258lb ft
• 3.0 TFSI V6, 292bhp/295lb ft
• 2.0 TDI, 190bhp/258lb ft
• 3.0 TDI V6, 265bhp/369lb ft

As you can see, the Swabians have increased the power output of the Q5 units by 20bhp across the board. In addition, there is a Porsche Cajun Turbo S in the works. It features Porsche’s own twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 rated at 350bhp. Also in the making is a Porsche Cajun Hybrid fitted with the same 211bhp four-cylinder-plus-47bhp-electric-motor kit as the Q5.

Porsche-specific tweaks include the Sport Chrono pack with launch control, stronger brakes with optional carbon-ceramic discs, wheels/tyres and the complete exhaust system including a switchable free-flow sports muffler.

Here are the Porsche Spy Shots that prove the new Porsche Cajun remains on target for a 2012 launch.

Auto Express can also confirm that a new hybrid-powered edition is under development, which will become the Stuttgart firm’s cleanest, most efficient model when it goes on sale in 2013.

Looking more like a heavily modified Q5, this prototype “mule” was snapped by our spy photographers as it left Porsche’s engineering department at the Nurburgring in Germany.

With a widened track, roll cage and blistered wheel arches, the newcomer certainly looks like it means business.

Although exact details are still scarce, the newcomer Compact Porsche SUV – Porsche Cajun is tipped to cost from £35,000 when it goes on sale.

Both three and five-door versions are expected, based on a bespoke chassis developed out of the one that underpins the Audi Q5.

Aiming to deliver a class leading on-road driving experience, the Porsche Cajun will have some ability off road.

However one source told us that engineers are currently spending more time lapping test tracks than dirt tracks, meaning the focusis very much on making the model live up to the firm’s legendary reputation for building great drivers’ cars.

Under the Porsche Cajun bonnet, Porsche is set to borrow heavily from Audi’s engine range. According to the latest speculation, it will be available with a 235 bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, plus a 180bhp 2.0-litre diesel.

Flagship Porsche Cajun S models will get a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 with at least 300bhp, while Porsche is reported to be considering an upmarket diesel edition too, with a 3.0-litre V6 offering 265bhp.

A hybrid Porsche Cajun model powered by a 178 bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine and 44bhp electric engine is also under development.

The electric motor is powered by a high performance lithium-ion battery, and it’s thought the car will offer some sort of plug in function, allowing limited electric only running.
