Classic Race Cars Porsche RennsportPorsche Cars North America (PCNA) and Porsche AG recently announced their support of the Porsche Race Car Classic 2011, to be held at the Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel, California.

The event is staged by the Bonnie J Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, and the renowned UCSF Thoracic Oncology Program, based in my home-from-home of San Francisco. The Race Car Classic is held in aid of lung cancer research. The link to Porsche is driving – as in driving lung cancer off the planet.

PCNA and Porsche AG will be providing support in logistics and marketing, distribution of materials, on-site vehicles and more. The manufacturer will also be bringing several cars from the Porsche Museum.

1951 Porsche 356 SpeedsterThe Race Car Classic is being billed as a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of vintage Porsche race cars from 1950-1965. Participants are said to be coming from all over the world, so the final line up should be quite something.

With the featured years finishing quite early, much of the late classic Porsche machinery will be absent. Without the usual 911, sportscar and Group C suspects, the hallowed lawns should have quite a unique look to them. On show will be purpose-built Porsche race cars, and production cars with significant race history during that period.

Porsche 356b 2000 GS Carrera GTThe Porsche Paddock will have about 150 cars including Gmünds, Glöcklers, 550s, 550As, 718s, 718/2s, 804s, 904s, 356 Coupes, Speedsters, and Convertible Ds. There’ll be Elva Porsches, DKS/Dreikantschabers (2000GS Carrera GT) and some bespoke-bodied cars. The Porsche Plaza will have about 50 cars, similar to the Paddock cars, and all historically significant.

The organisers are showing the cars for the Porsche Race Car Classic as included by invitation only.

This is a fundraiser, so tickets are on sale at $400, but Porsche AG and the warm hearted North American Porsche community will ensure there are some rare cars on show. Your ticket affords you the opportunity to celebrate the glorious racing history and great victories of these classic Porsche race cars, while feasting on local gourmet specialties and sipping heavenly wines from thirty leading wineries.

1953 Porsche 550 SpyderOver 3,500 attendees are expected, including special honoured guests and celebrities, and ticket holders will receive commemorative gifts with their ticket purchase.

To sum up, here’s what you need to stick in your diary:
