“The brand is so authentic because it is seen as a German company,” he told the Freie Presse newspaper’s weekend edition. “Porsche is going to continue to be ‘Made in Germany,’” he insisted.
Müller denied reports that the company was considering opening up plants in the US and China. The two countries are the company’s biggest markets, having long overtaken Germany.
He said the company plans to expand its plant in Leipzig, creating 1,000 more jobs. The plant already builds the Porsche Panamera and Porsche Cayenne and will soon also produce the upcoming Porsche SUV – Porsche Cajun.
In contrast to the company’s main production facility in Stuttgart, he said, the Leipzig plant has “an abundance of space.”
He rejected the idea that the company was under pressure to significantly increase the number of cars it sold. Profitability rather than volume was the decisive criteria, he told the paper.
Porsche is the most profitable carmaker in the world. In the first quarter of 2011 its profit margin was almost 22 percent. It sold more than 23,400 vehicles in that period, 13 percent more than a year ago.
