- 2011 Porsche 911 hybrid spy photos
Jalopnik tipster Cyrus came across a murder of crow-black Porsches at a California gas station: two Boxsters and this camouflaged Porsche 911 Turbo. Strangest part? The 911 made no sound as it pulled away. Is Porsche considering a hybrid 911?
Given the latest models coming from Stuttgart and tougher fuel economy regulations in all its markets, a hybrid 911 would be the next step. Porsche already builds hybrid versions of the Cayenne and Panamera; and it has electric versions of the Boxster rolling around Germany. And of course there’s the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid.
While there’s been lots of test Porsches caught out before, several things made the 911 stand out aside from just the sound. The brakes had extra devices attached, perhaps to measure regenerative effects. The rear hood was enlarged and vented. And the side vent shown in the pictures was just a stick-on decal.
The new 911 is expected later this year, and maybe by then Porsche will say whether its most iconic model and historic flat-six engine will get a little electric company.
